To safely reroute existing IC1 cables, the first interconnector will undergo a planned 3‑day shutdown, coordinated between Interconnect Malta, Enemalta, Terna Energy Solutions, and the Italian Transmission System Operator.

Local generation at Delimara will fully support Malta’s electricity demand throughout this period.

Additional civil works will also prepare a new fire‑protection system for the site.

Rerouting will be carried out jointly with our colleagues at Enemalta and Terna Energy Solutions

Production has commenced on key equipment for the project, including a 245kV autotransformer with a capacity of 250MVA, as well as 120MVAr and 240MVAr variable shunt reactors. This equipment is essential for ensuring effective voltage control and maintaining the stability of the interconnection. Manufacturing has started at the specialized facilities of BEST in Türkiye, in line with the agreed project schedule.

The €20.2 million contract is being executed by Maltese contractor AG Installations, in close collaboration with its international technical partner, BEST.

The project is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and contributes directly to a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy system.
